Advanced Figure Drawing 2: January

It's a new semester of figure drawing and I'm feeling great! I know that I improved a lot over the last semester, and I am excited to see where I will be at the end of this one!  Here are some of my favorite drawings from January.

Illustration 1: Character Design

For my Illustration 1 class our first assignment was to create a character.  There were a few parameters involving WWI-era pilots and grey-scale, but besides that it was pretty open to interpretation.  This is my Sugar Glider (flying squirrel-- get it?) pilot.  I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out and everyone in my class kept exclaiming how adorable he is. Success! :)

And here are some other ideas I came up with before I decided to go with the design above. I think I may play around with some of these as well.

Advanced Figure Drawing: Final Week

I left for home for Christmas break before I had a chance to upload the final week's worth of figure drawing for last semester.  We delved into drapery studies which was difficult but interesting.  I also am posting some of our out-of-class sketchbook assignments. So before I start posting figure drawing stuff for this new semester, here are the last few drawings.  Enjoy!

For the final exam my teacher had us select a couple of best pieces from the semester and hang them up on the wall.  He then returned to us the very first drawing we did in this class (which he had taken that day and kept the whole semester) and put it up next to the other pieces.  I remember being so proud of my first drawing when I turned it in and, while there are still really good things about it (such as proportions), I feel like I have really progressed (especially in terms of line quality and shadow).  It was great to be able to see them side by side and actually see physical proof of how much I have learned from this class.

Digital Illustration 2: Song Illustration

For our final assignment in Digital Illustration 2 we were supposed to illustrate a song.  Not just any song, but one that we can listen to over and over and over again without getting tired of it.  There were several songs that came to mind, but I finally decided on Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin.  I have been listening to and loving this beautiful song for as long as I can remember.  It was interesting trying to create an illustration for it.  I not only tried to incorporate some of the wonderful imagery found in the lyrics, but I also really tried to covey the feeling/mood of the song.

Thanks Dad for instilling in me a great love for this song and many others like it!

Advanced Figure Drawing: Week Twelve

Yay more figure drawing! The semester is drawing to a close (pun intended) which is sad, but I feel like I have improved/learned a lot from this class.  Also I am going to be taking it again (it is repeatable for credit) next semester!  So expect these posts to continue. :)  Here are this past week's gestures and sustained poses!

I'm not sure why this picture turned out so blurry...

...Here have a close-up to make up for it

Advanced Figure Drawing: Weeks Ten and Eleven

This last week was a really good one! I felt like my gestures were back on track (finally!) and I felt pretty good about the sustained poses as well.  I tried to be a little more anatomy/structure-based than I have been in the past and I think it was really helpful.

I love leg anatomy!
